1st Prize The Most Prestigus Boat Award
Arthur Simmonds ~ Sir Barty
10 Mar 01, Oamaru, Traditonal Boats Day

"Wooden craft just have a romance about them that you don't get with a moulded boat."

Punt is a winner for Ohoka builder
Builder Arthur Simmonds, of Ohoka, better known to some as bombardier Sir Barty of Alf's Imperial Army, has just won a traditional boat-building award. Mr Simmonds won the award for a wooden punt he designed and built, at a recent Oamaru competition, run by the Oamaru Historical Society. An army comrade who runs a punting business told Mr Simmonds he needed some bigger punts to accommodate larger tour groups. Mr Simmonds who used to build trailer yachts, came up with a design and built it. Mr Simmonds, who has been building for more than 40 years, loves history and says he gets immense pleasure from building the traditional craft. North Canterbury News March 27 2001
